Republican candidate for PA State House in the 88th District Lowell Gates graced the BOC with his presence at the Nov. 26 meeting.
Mr. Gates introduced himself to the board, announced that he is on a listening tour of local municipalities to learn the issues, and promptly proceeded to sit down and listen.
If you're interested, Mr. Gates has a campaign web site (Link) on which he states that "it may be hard to believe" that he is running for office. I don't know why, as Mr. Gates was widely expected to challenge Rep. Nailor in the 2008 primary whether Jerry resigned or not, and, according to a report in The Patriot-News, has been raising money since July, 2007 (Link).
The Republican primary is shaping up to be an interesting contest, with rumors already swirling that Rep. Nailor is considering supporting Lower Allen's own Shirley Delozier, president of Republican Women In Government (Link). It should be a full field, with candidates ranging from Mechanicsburg Mayor Jack Ritter - rumored to be considering a run - to Republican State Committee Man Matthew Seagrist.
The Democratic field is less crowded, but I have it on good authority that two-time candidate Margaret Stuski (Link) is back in town and ready to make the third time a charm. While Stuski's political past is an open book (Link), she may face a primary challenge.
And, just to clear the air, that challenge won't come from me.
While I've been flattered to have been considered a potential candidate, many factors have led me to conclude that 2008 is not my time to run for higher office. I'm happy to spend next year involved in my daughter's transition from high school senior to college freshman, leading the board of Shalom House (Link), participating in other volunteer activities, and sandwiching in some time alone with my best friend.
