This just in, Cumberland County Commissioners are reconsidering the current reassessment:
by MATT MILLER, The Patriot-News
Tuesday January 13, 2009, 11:12 AMCumberland County commissioners are considering whether to continue with the ongoing property reassessment. Their decision on the process which sets the property values on which real estate taxes are based, will affect the owners of more than 90,000 businesses, farms and homes.
Commissioners Gary Eichelberger and Barbara Cross said they have not decided whether reassessment should continue. Eichelberger said his concern is that the economy may be too volatile to secure accurate long-term property valuations. Commissioner Rick Rovegno said reassessment should continue because any values determined would be more accurate than the 2004 figures from the last reassessment.
No decision is expected on the matter at a special meeting commissioners have set for 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the county courthouse. The meeting is open to the public.
Seriously, do either Commissioners Eichelberger or Cross know what this decision will do to local municipalities and school boards? Do they understand how much further our tax revenues will erode if reassessment is delayed another year?
Do they?
I don't know, but there's one way to find out. I'm out of the office this week. Maybe I should take a drive to Carlisle Thursday morning.
